Drug Addiction Treatment

Battling Drug Addiction in Trenton

Heroin Vaccines: A Ray of Hope for Addicts

Heroin is a popular illegal recreational drug that falls into the category of opiates. Opiates are a class of drugs that are derived from poppy plants. Heroin is produced from morphine which is extracted from the seeds of the poppy plant and can be highly addictive leading to physical dependency.

Heroin is one of the quickest acting drugs which makes it very addictive. With time however, the body gets used to the drug resulting in the need for increased intake along with withdrawal symptoms such as muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

In order to reduce the amount of heroin consumption in the world, researchers have been working on the development of a heroin vaccine which will reduce dependency on the drug.

This move was done in light of the current heroin abuse situation in Trenton. It has been estimated that more than 20 million people around the world are addicted to heroin. This has put them at risk of potentially fatal diseases such as HIV which is transferred through shared syringes. Drug relapse is relatively high in heroin and is another reason why there is a need for the development of a heroin vaccine.

Test Trials

The test trials have proven successful. The cocaine vaccine has passed its pre-testing trials on rats and non-human primates. It is all set to be tested on humans within the next 7-8 months. Biologically, non-human primates are reported to being closer to humans than rats. Test results have shown that vaccinated primates showed a decreased activity to cocaine than non-vaccinated primates.

The cocaine occupancy level of the dopamine transporter which is 40% to achieve a high, dropped to 20% with the use of the vaccine. The results of vaccine lasted about 13 weeks in rats and 7 weeks in non-human primates.

Researchers are not sure about the amount of vaccine and number of times it would have to be given to humans to achieve the desired results. One thing is for sure is that the breakthrough of a cocaine vaccine will prove to be enormously beneficial for cocaine addicts in Trenton as well as those around the country who wish to remove this harmful drug from their life.

What Makes Cocaine so Addictive?

Cocaine doubles the amount of dopamine in the brain, a chemical responsible for pleasure and happiness. It artificially produces dopamine and increases its level in the brain causing ecstatic feeling. Gradually, the brain becomes tolerant of cocaine and addicts do not feel the same pleasure as they initially felt. This makes them start taking more in shorter periods of time to achieve the same feeling, thus causing a cocaine addiction.
